HR interview questions for freshers 7

Q1FresherMost asked
Answer

Tell me about yourself.

Use a present, past, future structure in about a minute:

  1. Present: who you are, your degree or current role, and your main skills.
  2. Past: one or two projects or experiences that show those skills.
  3. Future: why this role, and what you want to grow into.

Sample answer: "I am a [your degree] graduate. For the past [time] I have focused on cloud and DevOps. I am comfortable with Linux, Git, Docker and AWS basics. I built [your project], where I put an app in a container and deployed it with a CI pipeline in GitHub Actions. I enjoy automating repeated work and learning how systems run in production. Now I am looking for a [role] where I can learn from a strong team and help with deployments and monitoring."

Keep it relevant to the job. Do not read out your whole CV. End by linking to the role.

What they are checking: Whether you can communicate clearly and tie your background to the role.

Q2Fresher
Answer

How do you learn new tools and keep your skills up to date?

Show a method you can repeat, plus a recent example.

Structure: pick a goal, read the official docs, build something small, break it and fix it, then write it down or share it.

Sample answer: "When I need a new tool, I start with the official documentation and a short tutorial. Then I build a small lab, for example [deploying a sample app with Terraform and GitHub Actions on a free-tier account]. I write down what I learn and what went wrong. I follow release notes and a few blogs and communities. I also practise on real problems at work. Recently I learned [tool] in [time] and used it to [result]."

Mention hands-on practice, not just videos. Say that you ask for help when you are stuck after trying yourself.

What they are checking: Whether you are self-driven and learn in a practical, structured way.

Q3Fresher
Answer

Why are you moving from your current field (such as data work) into DevOps?

Show a logical, genuine path. Give proof that you have already started.

Sample answer: "In my [data role] I noticed that I enjoyed the pipeline work more than the analysis. I liked deploying jobs, automating runs, fixing failures and making things reliable. That led me to learn Linux, Docker, Git, CI/CD and AWS on my own. I built [project] to practise. My data background helps. I understand pipelines, data quality and the needs of teams who depend on stable platforms. DevOps lets me do that work full time and at a larger scale."

Show proof of effort (projects, certifications). Show how your old skills help in the new role.

What they are checking: Whether the switch is deliberate and backed by real effort.

Q4Fresher
Answer

Why did you choose DevOps over a field like cybersecurity?

Answer with what attracts you to DevOps. Do not put the other field down.

Sample answer: "Both fields interest me, and they overlap in DevSecOps. I chose DevOps because I like building and automating systems from start to end. I like to see a change go from code to production. The feedback is quick, and the work is hands-on with tools like Docker, Kubernetes and Terraform. I still care about security. I use least privilege, secret management and image scanning. I may specialise more in that direction later."

Keep it positive. Show that you understand the overlap. Do not sound undecided.

What they are checking: Whether you chose the path deliberately and understand how DevOps and security relate.

Q5Fresher
Answer

How would you reduce onboarding time for new team members?

Make the knowledge easy to find. Make the setup automatic.

  • Documentation: an up-to-date README, an architecture overview and runbooks, kept in the repo.
  • Automation: setup with one command (Docker Compose, a Makefile or devcontainer), and infrastructure as code so environments can be rebuilt the same way.
  • Access: a checklist and scripted access requests, so permissions on day one are not delayed.
  • People: a buddy, a starter task, and a short first-week plan.
  • Feedback: ask each new joiner what was confusing. Then fix the docs.

Sample: "On my last team I wrote a setup guide and a script that started the whole stack locally. It cut setup time from a day to about an hour."

What they are checking: Whether you think about documentation, automation and team experience.

Q6Fresher
Answer

Walk me through a scalable and monitored workload from your CV.

Pick one project. Explain it in layers: what it does, how it scales, how you watch it.

Sample answer: "In [project], I deployed [app] on [AWS service]. For scalability, I used [autoscaling group or HPA] with a load balancer, stateless containers and a managed database. For monitoring, I collected metrics and logs with [CloudWatch or Prometheus and Grafana]. I made dashboards for latency, errors and CPU. I set alarms that notify [Slack or email]. I ran a load test and tuned the thresholds. The result was [for example it handled X times the traffic without manual changes]."

Be ready for follow-up questions. What would you improve? What failed along the way?

What they are checking: Whether you can explain a design clearly and understand scaling and monitoring basics.

Q8ExperiencedMost asked
Answer

Tell me about your background and walk me through your current role and day-to-day work.

Structure: role and context, daily work, scale, impact, then the link to the new role.

Sample answer: "I am a [title] with [X] years of experience. I work at [company type], where I look after [environment, for example a multi-account AWS setup running Kubernetes]. My typical day covers three things. First, keeping systems healthy: I check dashboards and alerts, and handle incidents and tickets. Second, delivery: I maintain CI/CD pipelines, review Terraform changes, and support releases. Third, improvement work: cost savings, security fixes, and automation to remove manual steps. Recently I [achievement with a number, for example cut deployment time from 40 to 10 minutes]. I also [mentor juniors or write runbooks]. I want to take on [bigger scope the new role offers]."

Tips:

  • Mention real tools (Terraform, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, CloudWatch or Prometheus) and the scale (services, environments, traffic).
  • Show ownership and results, not only tasks.
  • Mention networking, DNS, certificates or monitoring only if the job needs them.

What they are checking: Whether your real responsibilities, scale and impact match the level you claim.

Q9ExperiencedMost asked
Answer

Describe your AWS and cloud experience and your responsibilities.

Group your answer by service area and say what you personally did.

Sample answer: "I have worked with AWS for [X] years. For compute I have run [EC2, ECS or EKS] workloads with autoscaling. For networking I designed VPCs with public and private subnets, NAT, security groups and Route 53. For storage and data I used S3, RDS and DynamoDB, with lifecycle rules and backups. For security I managed IAM roles and policies with least privilege, SSO and KMS. Everything is defined in Terraform, and deployed through CI/CD. For observability I set up CloudWatch metrics, alarms and logs. My own responsibilities are [for example on-call, cost reviews, building new environments]. One example: [project], where I [result]."

Prepare one deep story per area, because follow-up questions will test the details of what you claim.

What they are checking: Whether your depth matches your CV and you can back claims with examples.

Q10ExperiencedMost asked
Answer

What is the scale of the production environment you manage, and how do you handle large, complex environments?

State real numbers. Then explain how you keep the work manageable.

Sample answer: "I support [number] services across [number] AWS accounts and [environments]. That is about [number] servers or nodes and [number] databases, with roughly [traffic or users]. To manage this scale, everything is in Terraform. Config is standard through shared modules and images. Deployments run through pipelines. We use central monitoring and alerting. Patching and backups are automated. Runbooks cover the common failures. Standard tagging and cost reports keep spend visible."

Make sure the numbers are honest. Be ready to explain how you would handle growth.

What they are checking: Whether you have worked at real scale and rely on automation instead of manual work.

Q11Experienced
Answer

Why are you looking for a new role?

Be positive, honest and forward-looking. Never criticise your employer.

Structure: what you have gained, what you want next, why this company.

Sample answer: "I have learned a lot at [current company], especially [skill or achievement]. Now I want a role with [larger scale, more ownership, newer technology, or a platform engineering focus]. I cannot get that in my current position. This role matches because [specific reason from the job description]. I want to bring my experience in [your strength] and keep growing in [area]."

Avoid complaints about pay, your manager or colleagues. Avoid vague answers. Avoid reasons that suggest you leave quickly.

What they are checking: Whether your motivation is constructive and fits the role.
