Chemistry · Chapter 10
Study notes aligned to the official NEB syllabus.
Note: the scanned notes for this chapter had the wrong text (a duplicate of the non-metals chapter). The content below is written afresh from the official CDC syllabus for "Chemistry of Metals" and the standard NEB Class 11 scope.
Metals are electropositive elements that tend to lose electrons to form positive ions. They are lustrous, malleable, ductile, good conductors of heat and electricity, and form basic oxides. Most metals occur in nature not as the free element but combined in minerals; the branch of chemistry dealing with extracting and refining metals from these sources is metallurgy.
Metallurgy is the science and technology of extracting metals from their ores and refining them for use. The main branches are:
$$ \ce{CaO + SiO2 -> CaSiO3} $$
(calcium silicate). It is easily separated from the molten metal.
