What is an operating system? Describe the types of operating system. [2+8=10]
An operating system (OS) is system software that acts as an interface between the user and the computer hardware. It controls and manages all hardware and software resources (processor, memory, files, devices) and provides a platform for...
What is logic gate? Describe any four types of logic gate with truth table. [2+8=10]
A logic gate is a fundamental digital circuit that takes one or more binary inputs and produces one binary output ($0$ or $1$) according to a definite logical rule. Gates are the building blocks of all digital electronic systems. 1. AND ...
Describe different types of programming design tools with examples. [10]
Programming design tools are aids used in the program design phase to plan and represent the logic of a program before actual coding. The main design tools are:
1. Algorithm - a finite, step by step set of instructions written in simple English to solve a problem. Example - to find the greater of two numbers: Start; Read A, B; if A > B display A else display B; Stop.
2. Flowchart - a diagrammatic representation of an algorithm using standard symbols (oval for start/stop, parallelogram for input/output, rectangle for process, diamond for decision) joined by arrows.
Example: Start -> Read A, B -> decision A > B? -> display the larger -> Stop.
3. Pseudocode - an informal, language like description of the logic using keywords such as BEGIN, READ, IF, ELSE, PRINT, END. It is easy to convert into actual code. Example:
BEGIN
READ A, B
IF A > B THEN PRINT A
ELSE PRINT B
END
4. Decision table - a table that lists all conditions and the corresponding actions, useful when a problem has many conditions.
5. Data flow diagram (DFD) - shows how data moves through a system between processes, data stores and external entities.
These tools make the logic clear, reduce errors, ease documentation and make coding and future maintenance simpler.
What is memory? Describe the types of memory. [2+8]
Memory is the part of a computer that stores data, instructions and results either temporarily or permanently. It is measured in bytes, KB, MB, GB and so on. Types of memory: 1. Primary (main) memory - directly accessible by the CPU, hol...
What is number system? Convert (ABCD)16 hexadecimal number into octal number system. [1+4]
A number system defines how numbers are represented using a set of digits and a base. The hexadecimal system has base $16$ using digits $0$-$9$ and $A$-$F$, while the octal system has base $8$. Convert $(ABCD){16}$ to octal: first conver...
List the major features of mobile computing. OR Describe the major features of super computer. [5]
Major features of mobile computing: - Portability / mobility: devices are small and can be carried and used anywhere. - Wireless connectivity: connects to networks through Wi-Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth without cables. - Anytime, anywhere...
Describe different types of software. [5]
Software is a set of programs and instructions that tells the computer what to do. It is broadly classified as: 1. System software - controls and manages the computer hardware and provides a platform for application software. - Operating...
List out the functions of CPU. [5]
The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the brain of the computer that carries out instructions of a program. Its main functions are: - Fetch: it fetches (reads) instructions and data from main memory one by one. - Decode: the control unit ...
Describe the features of fourth generation computer. [5]
Fourth generation computers (1971 onwards) are based on the microprocessor, which is a single chip containing the entire CPU built using VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) technology. Features: - Component: microprocessor (LSI and VLSI ...
Describe Non-Impact Printers with example. [5]
A non-impact printer produces characters and images on paper without the print mechanism striking the paper. It uses techniques such as spraying ink, laser and toner, or heat, so it works quietly and gives high quality output. Features: ...
What is Internet? List the major uses of Internet. [1+4] OR Describe the features of Word-processor. [5]
Internet is a global network that connects millions of computers and smaller networks worldwide using a common protocol (TCP/IP), allowing them to share information and communicate. Major uses of the Internet: - Communication: email, cha...
Differentiate between Compiler and Interpreter. [5]
Both compiler and interpreter are language translators that convert high level source code into machine code, but they differ in the way they do it. Compiler Interpreter ------ Translates the whole program at once Translates and executes...
Subtract (11001)2 from (11101)2 using 1's and 2's complement method. [2.5+2.5]
We compute $(11101)2 - (11001)2$ using 5 bit numbers. Using 1's complement method: 1's complement of the subtrahend $11001$ is $00110$. Add to the minuend: $$ \begin{aligned} & \ \ 11101 \ +,& \ \ 00110 \ \hline & 1,00011 \end{aligne...
List out the advantages and uses of HTML. [2.5+2.5] OR Write the functions of DBMS. [5]
Advantages of HTML: - Easy to learn and use with simple tags. - Supported by every web browser and platform independent. - Free, no special software is needed to write it. - Can be integrated with CSS, JavaScript and other languages. - L...
Write short notes on: a. OCR b. Computer booting. [2.5+2.5]
a. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) OCR is a technology and input device that scans printed or handwritten text and converts it into machine editable text (character codes) that the computer can process. The OCR device reads the shape...
