Compulsory Nepali in Class 11 is the one paper every NEB student sits, whatever the stream, and it is also the one most students prepare last. The textbook has twelve reading lessons spread across poetry, stories, essays, a biography, a letter, a short play, reportage, dialogue, a diary and a speech, followed by grammar, practical writing, creative writing and the listening and speaking skills. The exam does not ask you to remember the text. It asks you to show that you understood it, that you can write about it in your own Nepali, and that you can handle the language itself.
This guide goes through all 16 units of the Class 11 Nepali course (subject code NEP11), says what kind of lesson each one is, lists the question types each lesson produces, and links the chapter notes and solved questions on the Class 11 Nepali subject page. The syllabus tree is on the Class 11 Nepali syllabus page.
How the Nepali paper tests you
Every reading lesson is taught, and examined, through the same six-part frame: an introduction to the writer, the genre (विधा), the subject matter and summary (विषयवस्तु र सार), the central idea (मूलभाव), the craft and language style (शिल्प र भाषाशैली), and the vocabulary and exercises (शब्दार्थ र अभ्यास). The chapter notes on notesharu are written in exactly that order, because it is the order the examiners draw their questions from.
The questions themselves come in four recurring shapes:
| Question type | What it looks like | Where the marks are |
|---|---|---|
| Comprehension (बोध) | A passage or stanza from the lesson with five short questions under it | Precise answers in a sentence or two, quoting the passage where it helps |
| Summary and central idea | "Write the summary of the story in your own words", "What is the central idea of the poem?" | A paragraph in standard Nepali, covering beginning, middle and end |
| Transformation and rearrangement | Turn a stanza into prose, put jumbled lines in order, change the register | Grammar and sentence sense, not opinion |
| Interpretation | "Explain the meaning of this line", "What does the writer want to say about hard work?" | Linking the line to the lesson's central idea |
Beyond the reading lessons, the grammar unit produces short objective questions, and the writing units produce one or two long tasks: a letter, a notice, an application, an essay or a paragraph.

Unit 1: वीर पुर्खा (poem)
The opening poem celebrates the courage of Nepal's ancestors and the making of the nation. Comprehension questions here are mechanical and easy to score: how many stanzas the poem has, which line has the most words, which stanza has equal word counts, a list of the rivers and places named. Then come the interpretive ones: what the poem says about our forebears, how their pride can be protected, and the meaning of single lines about Gorkha blood and the flag. Practise turning a stanza into plain prose, because that transformation is asked year after year.
Units 2 and 6: the two stories
गाउँको माया, by the story writer Ismali (Maheshwar Prasad Upadhyay), and त्यो फेरि फर्कला ? are the two stories. Story questions ask for the plot summary, the character sketch (चरित्र चित्रण) of the main figure, the central idea, and the meaning of the title. For the second story the character study is a separate subtopic in the syllabus, so expect a full 5-mark question on it. Write character sketches with three or four traits, each backed by one incident from the story.
Units 3 and 7: the essays
संस्कृतिको नयाँ यात्रा and पर्यापर्यटनका सम्भावना र आयाम are expository essays, one on cultural change and one on the potential and dimensions of ecotourism. Essay questions are argumentative: summarise the writer's view, list the points made for or against, and give your own position in a paragraph. The ecotourism essay is also a model for your own essay writing in unit 15, since it shows how to organise a topic under headings.
Unit 4: योगमाया (biography)
The biography of Yogmaya is examined through her life story (जीवनवृत्त) as a sequence: early life, the events that shaped her, her social and religious campaign, and her legacy. Questions ask you to describe her contribution, explain why she is remembered, and sometimes to compare biography with autobiography as genres.
Unit 5: साथीलाई चिठी (letter)
A letter to a friend introduces the personal letter as a genre and its format (ढाँचा). It is examined in two ways: comprehension of the letter itself, and the format question, which feeds straight into practical writing in unit 14. Learn the parts of a personal letter in order (place and date, salutation, body, closing) because that structure is marked.
Unit 8: लौ आयो ताजा खबर (short play)
The one-act play is examined through its characters, its message and the features of drama as a genre: dialogue, stage directions, conflict and resolution. A frequent question asks you to pick out the humour or satire in the play and say what social habit it targets.
Units 9, 10, 11 and 12: reportage, dialogue, diary and speech
These four lessons each introduce a practical genre. सफलताको कथा is reportage, a factual success story written like a news feature. कृषिशालामा is a dialogue set at an agricultural school. रारा भ्रमण is a travel diary, with a separate subtopic on describing the Rara region, which is a regular descriptive question. जलस्रोत र ऊर्जा is a speech on water resources and energy, and questions ask both about its content (Nepal's hydropower potential as the speaker presents it) and about the features of a speech as a form. For all four, the examiner's favourite question is "what are the characteristics of this genre, with reference to the lesson".
The four language skill units
Units 13 to 16 carry no reading passage but produce a large share of the marks.
- Grammar (व्याकरण, unit 13): spelling and letter arrangement (वर्ण विन्यास र हिज्जे), word and part-of-speech classes, word formation through prefix, suffix, compound and sandhi, gender, number, person and honorifics, case and inflection (कारक र विभक्ति), and tense, aspect and mood. These come as short objective items: correct the spelling, split the sandhi, identify the case, change the tense.
- Practical writing (व्यावहारिक लेखन, unit 14): personal letters and applications, official and business letters, notices and advertisements, invitations and greetings, condolence messages, and letters of honour. One long question, usually a choice between a letter and a notice.
- Creative writing (सिर्जनात्मक लेखन, unit 15): essay, paragraph, story and short story, poem, memoir and travel writing, and dialogue writing. The essay is the heaviest single task on the paper.
- Listening and speaking (सुनाइ र बोलाइ सिप, unit 16): correct pronunciation, logical response, group discussion and presentation, pace, pause and rhythm, oral description and public speaking. Assessed in school as internal evaluation rather than in the written paper.
A chapter-by-chapter study method
- Read the lesson once in the textbook, then read the chapter notes in the six-part frame. The notes give you the summary and central idea in ready exam language.
- Open the solved past questions for the chapter and write answers to two comprehension sets without looking at the model answers, then compare. The gap is usually precision, not understanding.
- For every lesson, prepare one summary paragraph and one central-idea paragraph you could reproduce in five minutes.
- Keep a grammar notebook for unit 13: every sandhi split and every spelling correction you get wrong goes in it.
- In the last two weeks, write one full practical-writing piece and one essay a day, timed.
The important questions view ranks the chapters and question types by how often they have appeared, and the Class 11 past questions collection has the board papers by year. Class 11 Nepali continues into Class 12 Nepali with the same structure, so the habits you build here carry over. For the other compulsory and optional subjects, the Class 11 notes hub lists every subject with its chapter notes.
