Differentiate between horizontal and vertical microprogramming.
Differentiate between horizontal and vertical microprogramming.
In horizontal microprogramming each control signal has its own bit in the microinstruction. In vertical microprogramming the signals are grouped into fields and coded, and a decoder gives the signals.
| Point | Horizontal | Vertical |
|---|---|---|
| Word length | Long | Short |
| Parallel signals | Many at once | Few at once |
| Decoding | None | Needed |
| Speed | Fast | Slower |
| Control memory | Large | Small |
