List the difference between static RAM and dynamic RAM.
List the difference between static RAM and dynamic RAM.
Both are semiconductor RAM, but they differ in how a bit is stored and in cost.
| Static RAM | Dynamic RAM |
|---|---|
| Uses flip-flops to store bits | Uses a capacitor and a transistor |
| No refresh needed | Must be refreshed regularly |
| Fast access | Slower access |
| Costly, less bits per chip | Cheap, more bits per chip |
| Used for cache | Used for main memory |
Because of these differences, a computer uses a little SRAM for speed and a large amount of DRAM for capacity.
