Explain the functional units of a digital computer system.
A digital computer has five functional units. The input unit accepts data and programs. The memory unit stores them. The arithmetic and logic unit (ALU) does addition, subtraction and logic operations. The control unit fetches and decodes instructions and sends control signals to all other units. The output unit shows the results. The ALU and the control unit together form the CPU. The units are joined by a system bus.
