What are the different types of instruction formats?

The instruction format depends on the number of address fields. The types are:

  • Three-address: ADD R1, R2, R3. Two sources and one destination.
  • Two-address: ADD R1, R2. The result replaces the first operand.
  • One-address: ADD X. The other operand and the result are in the accumulator.
  • Zero-address: ADD. Operands are on the stack, as in a stack machine.

Each format holds an opcode and zero to three operand fields. More addresses make the program short, but each instruction long.
